Major Earthquakes Devastate Caracas and coastal regions of Venezuela

On June 24, 2026, northern Venezuela was struck by two powerful earthquakes just seconds apart—a magnitude 7.2 foreshock followed by a 7.5 mainshock near Moron and San Felipe in Yaracuy state, close to the Caribbean coast. These were the strongest tremors to hit the country in over a century, with shallow depths amplifying destruction across La Guaira, Caracas, and surrounding areas. The quakes caused widespread building collapses, particularly “pancake” failures in vulnerable structures, leaving thousands trapped under rubble. As of June 29, the death toll has risen to approximately 1,450, with over 3,000–4,300 injured and tens of thousands still missing. The disaster exacerbates Venezuela’s ongoing political and economic challenges following recent instability. Recovery efforts remain intense five days later. Local volunteers, civil defense teams, and over 2,600 international rescuers from more than two dozen countries, including the US, El Salvador, Bolivia, and others, continue search-and-rescue operations with dogs and heavy equipment. Miraculous live rescues have occurred, such as a woman freed after 86 hours. US forces have helped reopen airports and ports for aid delivery. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez reported partial restoration of electricity (75%), water (68%), and roads (90%) in hardest-hit La Guaira, while schools remain closed and temporary shelters established. A presidential commission is assessing damaged buildings and planning reconstruction. Humanitarian needs are urgent and massive. An estimated 1.8 million people, including 680,000 children, require assistance. Priorities include medical supplies and field hospitals for trauma care, clean water and sanitation items, hygiene kits, emergency shelter/tents, food, kitchen sets, and psychosocial support. UNICEF, IFRC/Red Cross, and partners have dispatched initial shipments, but sustained funding and logistics are critical for long-term recovery amid damaged infrastructure. International solidarity offers hope, yet the road to full rebuilding will be long in this crisis-stricken nation.
