Hurricane Melissa: Devastation in Jamaica and Path to Recovery

Hurricane Melissa, a record-shattering Category 5 storm with 185 mph winds, struck Jamaica near New Hope on October 28, 2025, unleashing catastrophic destruction across the island nation. The eyewall ravaged southwestern parishes like St. Elizabeth and Manchester, submerging Black River—home to 4,200 residents—under floodwaters up to 13 feet deep. All buildings in the area, including supermarkets, court offices, and bakeries, sustained severe damage, with roofs torn off homes and businesses. Landslides buried roads, fallen trees crushed vehicles, and boulders blocked access routes, isolating communities. Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay suffered major structural harm, stranding thousands, while over 530,000 Jamaicans—nearly one-fifth of the population—lost power amid widespread blackouts and internet disruptions. At least eight fatalities were confirmed, with the toll expected to rise as rescue teams navigate debris. In the coming days, immediate relief is critical: U.S. search-and-rescue teams, alongside UN and NGO partners, are delivering food, water, medical supplies, and temporary shelters via Norman Manley Airport, which reopened for aid flights on October 29. Damaged storage facilities in Black River exacerbate shortages, demanding urgent airdrops and ground convoys to prevent disease outbreaks from contaminated water. Over 15,000 remain in shelters, facing mental health strains from this second major hit since Hurricane Beryl in 2024. Weeks ahead focus on recovery: Rebuilding infrastructure, restoring utilities, and supporting agriculture in flooded farmlands—Jamaica’s breadbasket—will require billions in international aid. The UK pledged £2.5 million, urging global donations to groups like Food for the Poor Jamaica. Prime Minister Andrew Holness declared a disaster zone, vowing resilience amid this historic calamity.
